Jeroen Verberne might be a name you already know. Verberne studied at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and now does his master studies jazztrombone at Codarts Conservatory of Rotterdam guided by Ilja Reijngoud. He stood out with his energetic way of playing and his vibrant personality. He joined the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest in 2013 touring throughout the Netherlands guided by Eric Vloeimans. In 2015 he joined the orchestra again, this time guided by Martin Fondse and with this set-up they won the Zilveren Notenkraker in 2016. During this period Jeroen also works together with the Metropool Orchestra guided by conducter Jules Buckley. Jeroen joins multiple international orchestras such as BuJazzO in Germany and the British National Youth Jazz Orchestra, touring internationally.
Already during his studies he joins the Amsterdam-based brass band Gallowstreet. In a short time Gallowstreet creates a furor and the band is very wanted in the Dutch music scene, they are booked for many Dutch festivals. Concerts in Europe and Africa followed. In addition to North Sea Jazz and Lowlands, a sold-out Paradiso also wasn’t a difficult task for them. In 2019, Gallowstreet expanded for the first time with a full string orchestra. Together with Pynarello, they played a successful show at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. That same summer, Jeroen got the chance to open Wende Snijders’ Wendes Kaleidoscope with Gallowstreet, two nights in a row in a sold-out Carré.
From 2017, Jeroen toured with the band Chef’Special, with whom he played sold-out shows throughout the Netherlands. In 2018 they won the 3FM Award for Best Live Act. Besides Gallowstreet and Chef’Special Jeroen is also helping out some other bands from time to time such as Jungle By Night, Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, the Jazz Orchestra of Concertgebouw and many more.
Jeroen visited the cities of New York and New Orleans to experience the music there first-hand, and is currently in Rotterdam (Manhattan on the Maas) exploring new ways of trombonistic expressiveness and ways of playing. In 2019 he founded Barking Fish, a brand new wind quintet with Joel Botma on trumpet, Kika Sprangers on alto sax, Jesse Schilderink on tenor sax and Marc Alberto on bass sax, focusing on free form and improvisation.
We hope you enjoy his session!
