Interview with Ellister van der Molen by Rolf Delfos and Coen Witteveen. Born into a music loving family, Ellister van der Molen started out young at the special talent class of The Hague’s Royal Conservatory. When she was 12, her father took her to concerts where she had the opportunity to hear masters of the Dutch jazz scene, including Ferdinand Povel and Jarmo Hoogendijk. While initially starting as a classical player, through the years she has established herself as a leader and soloist in a wide array of musical genres. Ellister was admitted to the ‘Jong Talent’ department at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague on classical trumpet, but she already knew that jazz was her true passion. This passion soon led her to jazz studies with some of the best players and teachers in the Netherlands, including Jarmo Hoogendijk, Ack van Rooyen and Frans Elsen. Now, as an international jazz trumpeter, the classical repertoire is still a source of inspiration and the friendships of those days still exist. Today Ellister is invited to perform around the world in a wide variety of musical contexts. She has played on a number of recordings and performed as a guest soloist with the Rein de Graaff trio, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NJJO) and with the Dublin Jazz Orchestra. Meanwhile, Ellister is also increasingly focusing on her development as a bandleader, composer and arranger. Her CD Smalls NYC received very positive responses and led to an appearance at the North Sea Jazz Festival. She was a guest soloist with the famous Brazilian Spok Frevo Orchestra and toured nationally and internationally with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Glenn Miller Orchestra and New York Round Midnight, among others, and not to miss Pori, Montpelliers and Glastonbury. She has been working as a free lance musician, playing in a diversity of music styles. Varying from music from the thirty’s to modern jazz styles, to hip and groovy rhythms and salsa music. “Music gives you a good excuse to take a moment to feel your emotions without thinking about concrete situations.” We hope you enjoy her session!
