Following his final exams he was awarded the Fock Medal for best student of the year and is since than very much sought-after saxophonist, playing in various symphony-orchestras and projects. During the 1960s Van Oostrom played in big bands and rock ‘n’ roll groups and formed his first bands under his own name. Since 1969 he has led the Dutch Saxophone Quartet. From that moment on he has alternately played jazz, classical music and new music. He is a member of ensembles such as The Beau Hunks, David Kweksilber Big Band and the formations of Loek Dikker and Pierre Courbois. As a freelancer, he plays for ASKO|Schönberg and the Ives Ensemble, among others. From 1981, Van Oostrom has been teaching saxophone at the Royal Conservatory. With pianist Wolfgang Watzinger, he forms a duo that performs a broad repertoire of European and American compositions from 1857 to the present, he plays in the band of vibraphonist and marimba player Ben Gerritsen and also performs with dance and theater companies. The combination with pianist Eddy van Dijken “SAXOPHOBIA” was formed in 1969 and specializes in the repertoire of the American C-Melody saxophonist Rudy Wiedoeft as well as historical “demo/concerts” on authentic saxophones, by Adolphe Sax, among others, from the period 1854-1960. His solo-work includes appearances with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. Leo is also a collector of rare reed instruments and an authority on the history of the saxophone. You should really check out this legend. We hope you enjoy his session!
