Interview with Suzan Veneman by Dutch Jazz duo Rolf Delfos & Bart Wirtz. Suzan Veneman grew up in a musical family. Here started her passion for music and turned that passion into a musical career. First she studied jazz at the Prins Claus Conservatory of Groningen, following lessons from her heroes Alex Sipiagin and Kurt Weiss. Later she studied in the United States of America at Rutgers University in New Jersey with important musicians such as Conrad Herwig, Joe Magnarelli and Victor Lewis.

After her studies in the United States she came back to The Netherlands to share her musical talent. In 2010 Suzan won the second price at the Prinses Christina Concours and later that year she got selected by the Nationaal Big Band festival in Hoofddorp as best soloist for the category of brass instruments. She also was invited for the Jazz Rising Stars program in Ravinia (Illinois, VS) in 2013 and took lessons from David Baker and Curtis Fuller.

Not only is Suzan a trumpet player, she also knows how to find her way within composing and arranging music. She got the second price on the ASMAC Big Band Arranging & Composing Competition in 2014 (LA, V.S.). And that’s not all! Suzan started her own jazz quintet in 2019 where she can show her talent as composer and trumpet player within her lively and colorful compositions.
